Background/Summary:
In recent law enforcement history there has been a paradigm shift from simply arresting individuals versus diverting them, when appropriate, to needed services to solve the root cause of an issue. The Police Department has implemented a program to reach out to homeless individuals and provide them with opportunities.
Since February 2016, the department has reached out to one hundred and eighty-one (181) homeless contacts. The department has developed strong partnerships with the following agencies to assist with this program:
- Recovery Innovations of Arizona (RIAZ)
- Deep Within Recovery
- Community Bridges
- Copper Springs
- Building Blocks
- West Valley Vet Center
- Homeless Youth Connection
- Phoenix Rescue Mission
Of the contacts made, many homeless wanted services and were transported to either rehabilitation centers, psychiatric centers or shelters versus continued trespassing/urban camping. Thanks to community partnerships several homeless individuals were able to receive services for the first time.
Outreach efforts continue and are focused in the Peoria Entertainment District. On February 22nd and 23rd, officers and community partners will contact as many individuals as possible. Community partners and social workers will assist in getting individuals to the appropriate resources and will aid in transportation. The Public Works-Utilities Department has also partnered to clean up common areas used for urban camping.
