Agenda Item: 18.A.

Date Prepared:  4/5/2018 Council Meeting Date: 4/17/2018

TO:Jeff Tyne, City Manager
THROUGH:
Erik Strunk, Deputy City Manager
FROM:  John R. Sefton, Jr., Director
SUBJECT:
2018 Spring Training

Summary:

2018 marked the 25th season of Spring Training Baseball at the Peoria Sports Complex. It also marked the first year since 2014 that the Sports Complex did not have a major construction project to unveil following the clubhouse renovations and 3-years of phased stadium upgrades.

The 2018 Padres and Mariners Spring Training offered a 30 game schedule, compared to 35 in 2017, which is reflected in the overall revenues. However, a positive takeaway is that per game averages increased in all game day revenue categories.

In one of the earliest starts in the league’s history, the 2018 Cactus League season opened on Friday, February 23. This early start was due to changes in Major League Baseball’s (MLB) collective bargaining agreement and created additional days off during the rest of the regular season. This had an impact on Spring Training attendance; every Cactus League ballpark drew its smallest crowd on or before March 1. The league worked hard to spread the word about the earlier start as this will be the norm for years ahead, but it may take time for fans to adjust. As expected, the momentum for game attendance dramatically increased across the league in March. The Cactus League, as a whole, was down 143,629 fans compared to 2017 with 24 fewer games overall, but had an increase in average per game attendance of 160. Below is a Cactus League team comparison of total and average per game attendance:

Our partners, the Peoria Diamond Club (PDC), started the season with 574 “Red Shirt” volunteers; 20% of them were new this season. The PDC annual Charity Game, which took place on February 23, drew 5,431 fans. Through their efforts, the Peoria Diamond Club continues to support local youth charitable organizations with their grant-giving program.
