Summary:
Each April, the City celebrates both Arbor Day and Earth Day, through tree planting and volunteer clean ups. This is in addition to all other City efforts throughout the year to actively practice and support environmental stewardship and sustainable service delivery. From assisting in the protection of the Verde and Salt River water sheds, to its financial support of energy efficient LED street lights, solar power at City facilities, a robust and active Recycling Program, the preservation of open spaces and trails, urban forestry efforts, enhancements to water conservation and the greater distribution of reclaimed water, and community engagement via its “Sustainable University,” Peoria is a city that is aware and appreciative of both its built and natural environments.
The City also takes great pride in its partnerships with outside groups to further advance the preservation of its environment. Recently, Peoria collaborated with the Salt River Project (SRP) to assist with the removal of 166 trees encroaching on power lines and planting 500 new tree plantings via its “Right Tree, Right Place” initiative, throughout the SRP service area. The value of this gesture amounts to approximately $175,000 and enhances the overall community forestry shade canopy and aesthetics for our residents.
In appreciation of this gesture and its commitment to environmental stewardship, the City would like to recognize and publicly thank SRP for its recent efforts in Peoria. Special guests David Rousseau, SRP President, and Lori Jones, SRP Manager of the ‘Right Tree, Right Place” program, have been invited to be recognized by the Mayor and City Council.
