Call and Notice of Election 

Purpose:

Discussion and possible action to: (a) call a nonpartisan candidate Primary Election on August 6, 2024 and if necessary, a nonpartisan candidate General Election on November 5, 2024; and (b) authorize staff to add additional issues to the ballot as directed by Council.

Summary:

The terms for Councilmembers in the Ironwood, Mesquite, and Willow Districts expire January 2025. A Primary Election, and a possible General Election, will be conducted to fill the upcoming vacancies.

 

Per City Charter, at the Primary Election, any candidate who shall receive a majority of all the votes cast at such election shall be declared elected to the office for which he is a candidate, and no further election shall be held as to said candidate. If no more than two candidates file nominating petitions for each vacancy in office, the Primary Election shall be dispensed with as to that office. If the primary election is dispensed with as to that office, the candidates equal in number to the persons to be elected who shall receive the highest number of votes at said General Election, shall be declared elected to such office.

 

The August 6, 2024 Primary Election and November 5, 2022 General Election ballots will contain the following for consideration by eligible voters:

(a) Primary Election - Councilmembers in the Ironwood, Mesquite, and Willow Districts, (b) General Election - Councilmembers in the Ironwood, Mesquite, and Willow Districts,  Districts (as necessary), and (c) Additional items as directed by City Council, if necessary.
Options:

A: Election procedures are mandated by Arizona State Statutes.

Staff Recommendation:

Staff recommends that Mayor and Council (a) call a nonpartisan candidate Primary Election on August 6, 2024 and if necessary, a nonpartisan candidate General Election on November 5, 2024; and (b) authorize staff to add additional issues to the ballot as directed by Council.

Fiscal Analysis:

The City Clerk’s Office has budgeted a total of $95,700 for the 2024 Primary and General Elections with approximately $45,000 allocated for the Primary Election.
