Summary:
Proposition 202, passed with the 2002 Gaming Compact in Arizona, directs participating Tribal Governments to share gaming revenues with surrounding local governments. Nonprofit organizations with IRS 501(c)(3) designations are the only entities eligible to compete for Indian Community gaming grants as long as they have a local government agreeing to serve as a pass-through agent. As a pass-through agent, local governments receive the grant award from the Indian Community and forward the amount to the nonprofit organization.
Billy’s Place Inc., a 501(c)(3) organization, applied for Gila River Indian Community grant funding and identified the City of Peoria as the pass-through agent. Peoria has acted as a pass-through agent for other local non-profits when they have received grants from the Gila River Indian Community.
Gila River Indian Community awarded Billy’s Place Inc., $20,000 to fund their Supporting Grief Peer Support Groups for Kids and Families program. Billy’s Place serves the City of Peoria by providing comfort and companionship to kids and families experiencing grief through support groups, special events, and community networking.
