|
| | | | | | | | Purpose:
Discussion and possible action to approve Intergovernmental Agreement for the West Valley Regional Veterans Court between City of Glendale in Maricopa County and the City of Peoria effective December 18, 2024. |
| | | | | | | | Summary:
On December 8, 2022, the Presiding Judge of the Maricopa County Superior Court issued Administrative Order No. 2022-158, which established the West Valley Regional Veterans Treatment Court for the municipal courts in the West Valley of Maricopa County. The program is designed expressly for veterans who have previously served or are currently serving and the program aims at reducing recidivism and increasing public safety. |
| | | | | | | | Previous Actions/Background:
The Glendale City Court has successfully operated a Veterans Court since October 2021. It is a voluntary program that includes regular court appearances before a Judge. Treatment consists of individual or group counseling, drug and alcohol testing, mental health treatment, medical treatment and regular attendance at recovery support self-help meetings. Successful completion and graduation from the program may result in a dismissal of the charges in certain cases or a reduction in sentence. |
| | | | | | | | Staff Recommendation:
Staff recommends approving the Intergovernmental Agreement between the City of Glendale and the West Valley Regional Veterans Court in Maricopa County effective December 18, 2024. |
| | | | | | | | Fiscal Analysis:
Glendale has received grant funding to assist in the startup and operation of the West Valley Regional Veterans Court from 10/2021 - 9/2025. Participating jurisdictions shall be invoiced a flat fee per case referred based on the average projected cost per case. The fee will include costs associated with the West Valley Regional Veterans Court Coordinator, Court Services Specialist, and court operating expenses that will be offset by the applicable grant funding amount. |
